I think ANZAC Day is an important day for Australians, as it is a day to reflect and also be proud of the brave men and women who fought for our country. As the celebrations have evolved, we don't just remember the troops from WWI, but the people who were part of the other wars Australia was involved in, such as World War II, the Korean War, Malayan Emergency and Vietnam, just to name a few. ANZAC Day is also about paying respects to the current troops scattered around the world taking part in various operations and conflicts. We don't just recognise the past, but the present and future veterans as well.
People often refer to the 'Australian Spirit' around this time. The Australian Spirit refers to the comradeship, compassion and friendship shown by the troops during World War I. This Spirit is still alive in Australians today, which is often why people think we are so friendly. We are always willing to help one another and we look out for each other. Well, most of us.
I'm so proud of and grateful to all the service men and women who gave their lives to protecting our country, past, present and future. I can honestly say that I am proud to be Australian.
"They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them."
